THE SALVATION ARMY,
CHESTER-LE-STREET 1880-2010
On 31st of December 1880,a small group of Salvationists from Gateshead ‘invaded’ Chester-le-Street and boldly announced that they had come to make war on sin and the Devil.
On the following day, Emma Terry and Matilda Edwards arrived to become the first Salvation Army officers, officially appointed to serve the people of the district and establish and command the new Corps.
From small beginnings, the Army in Chester-le-Street grew rapidly to become an active and integral part of the religious life of the town. It still adheres to it’s original evangelic aims, and whenever possible takes the Christian message out to the people.
